Iran’s Possible Stand‑Off: A Different Take
Middle EastWed Mar 18 2026
The idea of “winning” in war feels a bit like a wrestling match. In the ring, there are clear winners when both sides agree on the outcome, and there are messy finishes where everyone can claim victory. Wars usually have a clean ending, but many do not. Major wars like the world wars had clear winners and losers, while others—Korea, Vietnam, Iraq, Afghanistan—left open questions about who really won.
If we look at the current conflict, each side has its own goals. Israel’s goal is simple: every time U. S. forces strike Iranian weapons, it counts as a win for Israel. For Iran, the main aim is to stay in power; if the regime remains after the fighting ends, it has succeeded. The U. S. objectives are less clear. At first, the plan was to change Iran’s government, but that has been dropped. Now the U. S. might aim for reopening the Strait of Hormuz, lowering oil prices to $70 a barrel by 2027, or keeping the dollar as the main global currency. These targets are vague and hard to measure.
Because Iran’s goal is obvious—survival—and the U. S. goal is fuzzy, it raises a question: what if the war ends in a “dirty finish” where both sides can say they won? Imagine Iran standing firm against Israel and U. S. attacks, showing that it can control the Strait of Hormuz and keep its government alive. At the same time, U. S. forces might boast about the explosions they caused and the damage they inflicted.
In such a scenario, U. S. propaganda could claim victory by highlighting the destruction, while the world’s leaders would see a different picture: Iran remains in power and still poses a threat. This would mean the U. S. can’t claim a clear win, but Iran can say it survived and proved its strength.
This exercise helps us think about the real meaning of success in war. A clean win is rare; often, both sides find a way to claim victory, and the truth lies somewhere in between.
