Ireland has announced plans to upgrade its radar and underwater listening systems while working more closely with NATO allies. The move comes as the country faces new kinds of threats in the North Atlantic, such as hidden vessels that could spy or sabotage.
The plan also targets a “nexus” of important data cables and energy lines that cross Irish waters. Critics say Ireland’s current defense budget, the lowest in the EU, makes it hard to keep these routes safe.
To address gaps, Ireland will spend about two years developing new radar, towed sonar and sonobuoy equipment. It also wants to use space‑based tech and share data with European partners.
The strategy calls for deeper ties with Britain, France and the Joint Expeditionary Force of ten NATO members. Officials say this cooperation is essential for national security, even though it touches on Ireland’s long‑standing neutrality stance.
Prime Minister Micheál Martin warned that a disruption to gas lines with Britain could cripple the economy in just ten days. He stressed that Ireland has no choice but to strengthen its maritime defenses.
Despite a budget increase of one‑third for 2026, Ireland’s defense spending remains well below the EU average. The government is still looking for ways to raise its share of national income toward a more typical European level.
