This: nearly half of college graduates believe they could have snagged their current job without a degree. That's according to a survey by USA Today Blueprint Loans.
A college education is often seen as a must for many careers. But 46% of grads think they could have skipped the high costs and still landed a job. With over 42 million Americans struggling with student loan debt, it's no surprise many are questioning the value of their college education.
The average college graduate leaves school with around $29,400 in debt. While many still think their education was worth the effort, about a third wish they had chosen a different path. This sentiment is even stronger among millennials and Gen Z.
"It's a reflection of the broken promises of higher education," says HR consultant Bryan Driscoll. Colleges have become more like businesses, pumping out graduates with degrees that don't always translate to real-world skills.
Many graduates also report not using their degree in their daily work. This mismatch between what's taught in college and what's needed in the workplace has sparked a wide-scale debate about the value of higher education.
But is college still worth it? Finance expert Kevin Thompson says yes. On average, college grads earn significantly more than those without degrees. This can add up to over $1 million more over a 40-year career.
Still, colleges will need to adapt and ensure they're teaching skills that employers actually want.
