Is Planned Parenthood Worth Our Tax Dollars?
USAThu Feb 20 2025
Planned Parenthood, a name that often sparks debate, has been receiving a significant chunk of taxpayer money, around $700 million annually. This funding has been a hot topic, especially with figures like Elon Musk calling for an end to it.
The organization's financial reports paint a clear picture. In 2024, they reported a record number of abortions and over $2. 9 billion in net assets. Over the past two decades, taxpayer funding has skyrocketed by 245%, while the number of abortions has doubled. Meanwhile, services like cancer screenings and prenatal care have seen a decline.
The past decade has seen a 29% increase in taxpayer funding, from $540. 6 million to nearly $700 million. During this time, the number of abortions conducted by Planned Parenthood also rose by over 20%, reaching 392, 715 in 2022-2023. This is the highest number of abortions ever reported by the organization.
Profits have also surged, from $58. 2 million to $178. 6 million over the past 10 years. This raises questions about where the money is going and how it's being used.
Planned Parenthood's political arm, the Planned Parenthood Action Fund, spends millions to support candidates who back their agenda. In 2024 alone, they invested tens of millions to oppose President Trump.
States like Texas and Arkansas have shown that defunding Planned Parenthood is possible. They excluded the organization from Medicaid due to noncompliance with medical and ethical standards. The federal government could follow suit and redirect funds to community health centers that provide comprehensive care without performing abortions.
The federal government needs to take action. This could include disqualifying organizations that perform abortions from federal healthcare spending and issuing guidance that affirms states' rights to exclude abortion providers from Medicaid.
The administration should also restore regulations that separate Title X funds from abortion activities and enforce the Weldon Amendment. Withdrawing funds from states that mandate abortion coverage could also be a step in the right direction.
This isn't just about money; it's about values. Planned Parenthood performs, on average, 1, 076 abortions every day. That's nearly 45 every hour, or one every 80 seconds. Defunding it would send a strong message about America's stance on life and accountability.
