Is There a Genetic Link Between PTSD and Heart Disease?
Sun Jan 05 2025
Ever wondered how traumatic events might lead to heart disease? Researchers have been digging into this question by looking at how our genes might connect these two conditions. When people deal with traumatic events, they can develop Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), which includes stuff like flashbacks and feeling constantly on edge. And guess what? Having PTSD might make you more likely to get certain heart diseases, like coronary artery disease and high blood pressure.
Scientists aren't exactly sure how these two are related, but they think our genes might play a part. They checked genetic data from a ton of people with PTSD and different types of heart disease. They found that some genes were linked to both PTSD and heart disease. For example, common genes were found in PTSD and conditions like high blood pressure and heart failure, but not with a condition called atrial fibrillation.
Other factors might also explain this connection. Things like not being able to sleep, smoking, and substance abuse could be part of the puzzle. Inflammation in the body, caused by things like the protein IL6 and C-reactive protein, might also play a role.
To look deeper, scientists used a method called Mendelian randomization. This helped them check if having PTSD could actually cause heart disease. They found that PTSD might directly increase the risk of coronary artery disease and heart failure, and to a lesser extent, high blood pressure. Even after considering factors like insomnia and substance abuse, PTSD still seemed to be a risk factor.
All this shows that there's definitely a link between PTSD and heart disease. It's not just that having one makes you more likely to have the other—there might be specific genes and health habits involved. Understanding this connection could help doctors find better ways to prevent heart disease in people with PTSD.
