Israel's Ongoing Battle: A Closer Look at the Gaza Conflict
Gaza, IsraelSun Apr 20 2025
The situation in Gaza is tense, with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu insisting that Israel has no other option but to keep fighting. He is determined to wipe out Hamas, free the hostages, and make sure Gaza doesn't pose a threat to Israel. This isn't just about Gaza, though. Netanyahu is also focused on stopping Iran from getting nuclear weapons.
The pressure on Netanyahu is mounting. Families of hostages, reservists, and even retired soldiers are questioning the ongoing war. This comes after Israel broke a ceasefire last month. Netanyahu claims Hamas turned down Israel's latest offer to free half the hostages in exchange for a continued ceasefire.
The fighting has been intense. In just 48 hours, Israeli strikes killed over 90 people. This includes children and women. The southern city of Khan Younis saw at least 11 deaths, with several people killed in a tent area housing displaced people. Israel has marked this area as a humanitarian zone. Meanwhile, in Rafah city, four more people lost their lives, including a mother and her daughter.
The war has taken a heavy toll. Around 90% of Gaza's population is displaced, with many living in tent camps or damaged buildings. Aid groups are warning that thousands of children are malnourished, and most people are barely eating one meal a day. The World Health Organization has urged the new U. S. ambassador in Israel to push for lifting the blockade on Gaza to allow aid in.
The conflict began when Hamas-led militants attacked southern Israel, killing about 1, 200 people and abducting 251. Most hostages have been released, but 59 remain, with 24 believed to be alive. Israel's offensive has resulted in over 51, 000 Palestinian deaths, mostly women and children. The war has also destroyed much of Gaza and its food production capabilities.
Frustration is growing on both sides. There have been rare protests against Hamas in Gaza and weekly rallies in Israel demanding a deal to bring all hostages home. Israel has vowed to intensify attacks and occupy large "security zones" in Gaza indefinitely. Hamas, on the other hand, wants Israeli forces to withdraw from the territory.
