Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, 75, will have his prostate removed in a surgical procedure scheduled for Sunday. This development comes amidst multiple challenges he's facing, including an ongoing war in Gaza and his trial for alleged corruption. Netanyahu is part of a group of older world leaders, such as U. S. President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump, whose health is under close scrutiny due to their age. The surgery will cause Netanyahu to be fully sedated and hospitalized for a few days, leading his lawyer to request the postponement of his court testimony this week. Justice Minister Yariv Levin, a close ally of Netanyahu, will act as the interim prime minister.
Prostate issues are common among older men, and recovery can be swift. Netanyahu was diagnosed with a urinary tract infection last Wednesday, caused by a benign prostate enlargement. Although the infection was treated successfully with antibiotics, a procedure to remove the prostate is planned. Dr. Shay Golan from Israel’s Rabin Medical Center explained that an enlarged prostate can block proper bladder emptying, leading to infections or other complications. After medical treatment, removing the prostate can prevent future blockages. Since Netanyahu’s prostate is not cancerous, doctors will likely perform an endoscopic surgery, lasting about an hour with a quick recovery.
Netanyahu has had health issues before, including a heart condition. Despite insisting he is in excellent health, his office has promoted a public image of him as vigorous. However, last year, it was revealed that he had a heart condition that required a pacemaker. This news came during massive anti-government protests, adding to public distrust. Last year, he was also hospitalized for possible dehydration, and earlier this year, he underwent hernia surgery.
The surgery occurs during a period of regional unrest. As Israel’s leader, Netanyahu is at the center of global events shaping the Middle East. His absence could be risky, particularly with ongoing violence in Gaza and intensifying conflicts with Iran-backed Houthi rebels. Prostate issues, although common among older men, draw attention to Netanyahu’s age and could impact his projected image of vigor, crucial for both domestic and foreign audiences.
