Jack Smith, a former special counsel, is preparing to speak openly about his probes into Donald Trump. This comes after he was privately questioned by the House Judiciary Committee. The committee's leader, Jim Jordan, announced Smith's upcoming public appearance.
Smith's investigations led to two charges against Trump. One was about secret documents found at Trump's Florida home. The other was about Trump's attempts to change the results of the 2020 election. Both cases were dropped after Trump won the presidency again in 2024. Smith said this was because of legal rules that prevent charging a sitting president.
During his private testimony, Smith strongly disagreed with the idea that his investigations were meant to stop Trump from running for president again. He also said that the attack on the U. S. Capitol on January 6, 2021, wouldn't have happened without Trump.
Smith was appointed to his role by the then-Attorney General, Merrick Garland. He has been ready for months to answer questions publicly about his investigations. Trump, however, has denied any wrongdoing and claims that the Justice Department was used against him.
