James Bond's Next Director: What's the Deal?
Hollywood, USASun Jun 29 2025
Denis Villeneuve is set to helm the next James Bond film, but there's a catch. He won't have final cut privileges, and he's only committed to one movie. This isn't new for the Bond franchise. No director has ever had final say under the Broccoli family's watch, and that rule still stands even with Amazon MGM at the helm.
Amazon MGM is also on the hunt for a screenwriter and the next Bond actor. Casting won't start until the script is ready. Villeneuve is busy with Dune: Part Three, so Bond is on hold until early 2027.
Producers Amy Pascal and David Heyman picked Villeneuve over other big names like Edward Berger and Edgar Wright. They're also eyeing young actors for the lead role, with Jacob Elordi, Tom Holland, and Harris Dickinson in the running. Older names like Henry Cavill and Idris Elba are out of the picture.
Interestingly, Christopher Nolan and Alfonso Cuarón were approached first but passed on the project. Nolan was even offered final cut, but he chose The Odyssey instead. Cuarón opted for Jane, starring Charlize Theron.
Villeneuve's lack of final cut could cause issues. Past examples like Blade Runner and Suicide Squad show that creative tension can arise when directors don't have the final say. Pascal and Heyman are big fans of Villeneuve's work, though, and are excited to collaborate with him.
Dune: Part Three is set to wrap up Villeneuve's current projects before he dives into Bond. With filming for Dune expected to start this summer and a release date of December 18, 2026, Villeneuve's Bond adventure won't begin until early 2027.
