James Murdoch’s Bold Move into Podcasts and City Life
New York City, USAThu May 21 2026
A deal worth more than $300 million has landed James Murdoch, the son of media magnate Rupert Murdoch, at the helm of two influential outlets: New York Magazine and Vox Media’s podcast network. The transaction, executed through his firm Lupa Systems, gives him control over a publication celebrated for its deep dives into culture, politics and fashion, as well as a podcast arm that reaches audiences comparable to cable news.
The purchase signals Murdoch’s ambition to shape contemporary media. By acquiring the podcast division, he taps into a demographic that advertisers chase fiercely. The deal also includes Vox. com, the online news site known for its explanatory journalism.
Key voices from Vox, such as Kara Swisher and Scott Galloway, were central to the negotiations. Both hosts of the popular Pivot podcast praised Murdoch and his wife Kathryn for their business acumen and willingness to take calculated risks. Their involvement helped secure the continuation of flagship shows under new ownership.
Murdoch’s move follows a rift with his father over editorial control of the family empire, which led to his resignation from News Corp’s board in 2020. The new arrangement places Vox Media’s podcast and publishing assets under Lupa Systems, alongside other ventures like Art Basel events and Tribeca Enterprises.
Vox Media’s CEO Jim Bankoff will remain in charge of the brands, with a transition expected to finish within four to six weeks. The acquisition does not cover other Vox properties such as Eater, Popsugar or The Verge; those will form a separate company.
With over 400, 000 paying subscribers and millions of digital readers, New York Magazine’s reach will expand under Murdoch’s guidance. The deal marks a significant shift in the media landscape, blending traditional print influence with modern audio storytelling.
