Janet Hadar Takes the Helm at UAB Health System
Starting January 12, 2026, Janet Hadar will step into her new role as the Chief Operating Officer (COO) for the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) Health System. With a wealth of experience under her belt, Hadar is poised to make a significant impact on one of the largest health systems in the state.
A Giant in Alabama Healthcare
The UAB Health System is a behemoth in Alabama's healthcare landscape. Spanning all 67 counties in the state and extending beyond, it operates 133 locations, making it the largest health system in Alabama. The system includes:
- UAB Hospital
- UAB Medical West
- UAB St. Vincent’s (formerly part of St. Vincent’s Health System)
With over 3,173 beds and serving nearly 1.4 million patients annually, UAB Health System plays a crucial role in providing healthcare, especially in rural areas.
Hadar's New Responsibilities
In her new role, Hadar will oversee the day-to-day operations of UAB Hospital, UAB St. Vincent’s, UAB Medical West, and related services. She will also provide strategic guidance to the hospitals managed by UAB Health System across the state. Hadar expressed her enthusiasm for the role, stating her commitment to making a difference and building relationships with all stakeholders.
A Proven Leader
Before joining UAB, Hadar served as the President and CEO of the University of North Carolina Hospitals. Over her 20-year tenure, she rose from Director of Care Management to the top position. Under her leadership, UNC Hospitals achieved a top rating from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS). Additionally, the hospital expanded mental health services and constructed new facilities.

Hadar's career is marked by diversity and excellence. She has worked as a consultant, nurse practitioner, and in intensive care units. Her educational credentials are equally impressive:
