In a sudden turn of events, a sinkhole the size of a large swimming pool opened up in Saitama City, Japan, on Tuesday morning. The unexpected collapse happened at a busy intersection, catching a truck off guard and pulling it down. This enormous crater, stretching about 32 feet wide and 16 feet deep, was likely caused by a crack in a nearby sewer pipe, according to local officials.
Emergency services rushed to the scene, with more than a dozen fire trucks on site. Rescue teams faced a tough challenge: the truck driver was still trapped inside the vehicle, buried under sand and mud. To keep him safe, rescuers were pumping oxygen into the hole.
The driver remained conscious for several hours after the incident, even managing to talk to police. However, communication became difficult as the day went on. The intersection is close to the city hall and is surrounded by restaurants and local businesses.
