Japan's September Heatwave: A Wake-Up Call
JapanWed Oct 02 2024
In Japan, last month was the second-hottest September ever recorded. The eastern and western coasts broke their own records for average temperatures. The nation as a whole saw an increase of 2. 52 degrees Celsius compared to the usual average. This is just behind last year's record since 1898, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency.
The cause? A strange shift in weather patterns. The subtropical jet stream moved north, and a high-pressure system from the Pacific lingered over Japan. These conditions let warm air wrap around the country, driving up temperatures. Even the ocean near Japan was unusually hot, which might have added to the heatwave on land.
This isn't just about Japan. It’s a global issue. The world hit 16. 82 degrees Celsius in August, crossing an important line: 1. 5 degrees above pre-industrial levels. This is a big deal for climate change efforts. Human activities, like releasing greenhouse gases, are making the planet hotter and triggering more severe weather events like droughts, wildfires, and floods.
The heatwave in Japan serves as a reminder that our actions have consequences. It's crucial to recognize how everything is connected and work together to lessen the impact of climate change.
