Last Friday, JD Vance, the Republican nominee for vice president, addressed a crowd in Lindale, Georgia. He pointed out that the state has over 400,000 undocumented immigrants, with about 120,000 of their children enrolled in public schools. Vance believes this is straining Georgia's education system.
"Think about how it affects Georgian kids when you add over 120,000 students who don't speak English," he said. He blamed the Biden-Harris administration's immigration policies for making the situation worse by allowing uncontrolled migration.
Vance highlighted classroom crowding and the extra work teachers face with students who struggle with language barriers. Georgia schools now have nearly 10% of students needing additional language help.
He criticized Vice President Kamala Harris, saying her handling of immigration has worsened the border situation, impacting states like Georgia. Vance linked migrant children in schools to broader issues like drug trafficking and border security, which he thinks the Biden administration hasn't addressed well.
"We're not mad at these kids; we blame Kamala Harris for letting Mexican drug cartels do their thing," he added. Georgia's undocumented population has grown, with about 400,000 residents, many of whom have children in public schools. This is putting more pressure on education resources.
Vance's comments are part of the Republican ticket's strategy to focus on immigration and border security ahead of the 2024 election. As a key battleground state, Georgia can expect immigration to be a big topic in Vance's campaign.
