Jersey City Takes Action Against Unlicensed Smoke Shops
Jersey City, NJ, USAFri Mar 27 2026
City officials in Jersey City have taken decisive steps to curb unlicensed smoke shops that are operating without proper permits. Five businesses were shut down after a coordinated effort by the local police and federal partners, which also led to several arrests. The crackdown followed complaints from residents about unsafe products and unfair competition with licensed retailers.
The city issued 26 summonses during the operation, targeting shops that sold flavored vape cartridges and other THC‑laden items. Authorities seized nearly 16 pounds of suspected cannabis, more than 600 plastic bags, and around $9, 000 in cash that likely came from illegal sales. They also found hundreds of THC gummies and other candy‑style products, some with dangerously high doses.
Licensed cannabis stores have long argued that unregulated shops are undermining the legal market. These unauthorized businesses often sell questionable products, including Delta‑8, and can attract customers with lower prices. Retailers claim they face higher costs for permits, taxes, and rent compared to their unlicensed competitors.
The mayor of Jersey City announced increased oversight this year as part of a broader plan to address neighborhood concerns. Police worked closely with the DEA, and the investigation is still ongoing. Officials say they will continue to enforce regulations and protect consumers from unapproved cannabis products.
