Jharrel Jerome isn't your typical actor. He didn't meet Anthony Robles, the wrestler he plays in the new film "Unstoppable, " over coffee or dinner. Instead, they hit the gym together. Jerome, not a gym rat, felt the pressure immediately. Robles is no ordinary wrestler either. Born with one leg, he's a college champ, known for his quick moves and unconventional style. To play Robles, Jerome spent hours training with him, learning his unique wrestling techniques. "It was the toughest physical challenge I've ever faced, " Jerome admits. Robles, being both coach and body double, showed Jerome his fierce side on the mat.
"Unstoppable" tells Robles' story, from his humble start to NCAA glory, and his challenging home life. Jerome felt a responsibility to get it right. Working with Jennifer Lopez, who plays Robles' mother, was eye-opening. "She really threw herself into the role, " Jerome says. For the 27-year-old actor, "Unstoppable" is a first – a leading role in a major movie without auditions. But COVID and industry strikes delayed filming. "It's been a five-year journey, " Jerome says. Despite the challenges, Jerome's love for wrestling continues. He's not ready to compete in real matches yet, but he's hooked on the sport.
