Joe Buggs, a name that resonated deeply in the sports world of Hampton Roads, has passed away at the age of 88. His impact was immense, leaving a legacy that stretched across multiple sports and decades. Buggs was not just an athlete; he was a coach, a mentor, and a figure who inspired many. His athletic prowess was evident early on. In the 1950s, he excelled in football, basketball, baseball, and track and field at Huntington High School in Newport News. His talent was undeniable, earning him all-state honors in all four sports. He continued this streak at Elizabeth City State University, where he was All-CIAA in all sports and a Black All-American in football twice. After college, Buggs faced a tough choice: a tryout with the Pittsburgh Steelers or a shot at playing baseball with the St. Louis Cardinals. He chose football, but a knee injury cut his playing career short. This setback, however, opened the door to his coaching career. He became an assistant coach at North Carolina A&T, Norfolk State, and Hampton University. His versatility was notable, as he also coached basketball and served as interim head coach for five games during the 1974-75 season.
Buggs' coaching career was marked by success and dedication. He led the track and field program at North Carolina A&T for four years before returning to Smithfield High as head coach for both football and track. His influence extended to his alma mater, Huntington High, and Menchville, where he coached track. His coaching journey culminated with a state championship in 1999 as an assistant coach at Surry County High, working alongside his son, Kermit Buggs. His contributions to sports were recognized with inductions into six halls of fame, including the Athletic Hall of Fame of the Lower Virginia Peninsula and the Hampton Roads African-American Sports Hall of Fame. Buggs' life was a testament to his passion for sports and his commitment to mentoring the next generation. He is survived by his wife, Carolyn, and his son, Kermit. His legacy will continue to inspire athletes and coaches alike.
