"This weekend, the much-anticipated 'Joker: Folie à Deux' didn’t quite hit the mark it was hoping for. The domestic weekend opening was even lower than initially expected, raking in $37. 8 million. Sunday’s earnings dipped by 45% compared to Saturday's $11. 3 million. With a production budget of over $190 million, the film has a long way to go to break even.
Overseas, it fared better with $81. 1 million, but prospects aren't cheery. The studio, now under the leadership of David Zaslav, gave filmmaker Todd Phillips more creative freedom, but at a cost—almost double the original Joker's $70 million budget. With only one co-financier, Domain, contributing 25% to the budget, the pressure was on.
The issue? Critics and audiences didn’t get what they expected. The film's marketing played up certain elements—like the iconic dancing scene on the stairs—which never made it into the final cut. This misled audiences, leading to disappointment and anger. Some theatergoers were so upset that they shouted at the screen!
The poor word of mouth and low CinemaScore rating (D) reflect the disconnect between what was promised and what was delivered. Only 5% of the gross came from the lower 40% of theaters, showing that general audiences weren't interested. The original Joker holds the October domestic record with $96. 2 million, and the sequel looks like it won't come close.
Next weekend, Joker 2 might still stay on top, even if it sees a significant drop to $9-$10 million. Other competing films like 'The Marvels' and 'Terrifier 3' could pose threats. Stay tuned to see if Joker 2 manages to hold its ground! "
