In Venezuela, things got tense for media workers recently. More than a dozen journalists were held for a while on Monday. They were just doing their jobs, covering events in Caracas. This included a march backing former President Nicolas Maduro and the start of a new legislature. All of them were let go later, but one foreign journalist was sent out of the country. Most of those held worked for big international news groups, with one working for a local outlet. It's hard to say for sure how many were really detained. The Venezuelan government didn't say much about it. Neither did some big news agencies when asked for comments.
This all happened after the U. S. military took Maduro into custody over the weekend. On Monday, he was in a New York court, saying he didn't do what they said he did. Now, the vice president, Delcy Rodriguez, is in charge for now. It's a tough time for journalists in Venezuela. They face risks just for reporting the news. This isn't the first time something like this has happened. But it's important to remember that freedom of the press is key to a healthy democracy. When journalists can't do their jobs safely, everyone loses.
