Yaxel Lendeborg’s rise feels like a sports fairy tale, yet it is rooted in hard work and family ties. Born on September 30, 2002, in Puerto Rico, he grew up moving from Cincinnati to Pennsauken, New Jersey. His parents, both former Dominican Republic athletes—his mother in volleyball and his father in basketball—instilled a love for the game early on. During high school, Lendeborg faced academic hurdles and was cut from the basketball team at sixteen. He spent long hours gaming, but a turning point came when he attended a Dominican‑focused camp in New York. That exposure opened doors to Arizona Western College, then UAB, and eventually the University of Michigan, where he earned Big Ten Player of the Year honors.Academically, a dual‑enrollment program at Camden County College helped him regain eligibility.
