Justice Delayed: A 2014 Murder Case Resurfaces in North Charleston
North Charleston, USASat Jun 28 2025
A man is back in North Charleston to face charges for a murder that happened over a decade ago. Jimmie Harris Jr. , now 37, is accused of killing Debra Randall Martin in a revenge attack. He is also charged with attempted murder and illegal firearm possession.
The incident dates back to New Year's Day in 2014. It started with a fight at a club called Club Crucial, which is now closed. Harris and Montreal Ford, 33, were involved in the altercation. Things took a dark turn after the fight.
Ford reportedly shot and killed Harris' stepmother, Janet Royal, later that night. In retaliation, Harris went to a home believing he was shooting Ford's mother. Instead, he killed Martin, who was mistaken for Ford's mother because Ford used the same alias as his mother. Harris also shot Ford's actual mother, but she survived.
Ford has already been convicted and is serving 17 years for voluntary manslaughter and attempted murder. Harris, however, had been in a federal prison in California serving a 40-year sentence for an unrelated crime. He was recently extradited to North Charleston to stand trial for these charges.
The case highlights how long legal processes can take. It also shows the complex nature of revenge crimes and the mistakes that can happen in the heat of the moment. The trial will likely bring more details to light about what happened that night.
