The UK is shaking things up in its court system. The government wants to speed things up by limiting jury trials. This change is aimed at cases where the punishment is less than three years in jail. Instead of a jury, a single judge will decide if someone is guilty or not.
This idea is part of a bigger plan to tackle a huge backlog of cases. Right now, almost 80, 000 cases are waiting in the Crown Court. That's a lot! The backlog has more than doubled since 2019. Some cases won't even go to trial until 2029. That's a long time to wait for justice.
The government says this change is necessary. They argue that the current system is too slow. They also point out that other countries don't always use juries for less serious crimes. But not everyone agrees. Some people worry that this could weaken the justice system.
The most serious crimes, like murder and rape, will still have jury trials. The government says jury trials will still be the norm for these cases. But for less serious crimes, the new "swift courts" will be the way to go.
The government asked a retired judge to review the situation. His findings led to this proposal. Now, it's up to lawmakers to approve it. If they do, the UK's court system will look quite different.
