The International Criminal Court (ICC) has made a significant decision. It has refused to stop its investigation into the actions of Israel during the Gaza war. This decision was made by appeals judges. They did not accept Israel's request to halt the probe.
The investigation includes events after the October 7, 2023, attack by Hamas. This attack led to a war in Gaza. The ICC's decision means that the arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former defense chief Yoav Gallant are still valid.
Israel does not recognize the ICC's authority. It also denies committing war crimes in Gaza. The country says its military actions are aimed at eliminating Hamas. The ICC had also issued a warrant for Hamas leader Ibrahim al-Masri. But it withdrew this warrant after reports of his death.
The war has caused massive destruction in Gaza. A ceasefire was agreed upon on October 10. But the living conditions in Gaza remain very bad. According to Gaza health officials, around 67, 000 Palestinians have been killed in the conflict.
This ruling is just one part of several legal challenges by Israel. The ICC is still considering other challenges to its jurisdiction in this case. There is no set timeline for these decisions.
