On a Sunday morning, Vice President Kamala Harris was spotted attending church services in Georgia. Alongside legendary singer Stevie Wonder, she aimed to encourage Black voters to cast their ballots in the upcoming election. This passionate effort is part of a national campaign known as "souls to the polls, " which emphasizes the power of the vote.
Harris visited New Birth Missionary Baptist Church in Stonecrest and Divine Faith Ministries International in Jonesboro. Her husband, Doug Emhoff, who is Jewish, joined her later in the day for an interview with the Rev. Al Sharpton. Meanwhile, her running mate, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, was attending services in Saginaw, Michigan, while his wife, Gwen, was in Las Vegas for a separate church visit.
This mobilization effort, initiated by the National Advisory Board of Black Faith Leaders, kicked off on October 20. Representatives are traversing key states with early voting underway. The push coincides with strategically chosen church visits, aiming to inspire every voter, regardless of their voting history or current political climate.
On Saturday, Harris had rallied supporters in Detroit with singer Lizzo, focusing on abortion rights and discussing the grief caused by restrictive laws in Georgia. Post-Sunday services, she's scheduled to campaign with former U. S. Representative Liz Cheney in the suburbs of Pennsylvania, Michigan, and Wisconsin.
“Faith is an action, and service is its expression, ” Harris shared recently, recalling her childhood in the choir of an Oakland church and her deep admiration for the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. and her mother's Indian religious traditions.
"Souls to the polls" began during the Civil Rights Movement, with tragedies like the killing of Rev. George Lee inspiring acts of voter registration. Today, Black churches remain central in encouraging voters, highlighting the enduring struggle against voter suppression tactics that date back to the Jim Crow era.
In Georgia, early voting commenced on Tuesday, drawing over 310, 000 voters on the first day — double the number from 2020. The 2020 presidential election saw a record 5 million votes in the state.
