Kamala Harris's Concession Speech: What to Expect
Washington DC, USAThu Nov 07 2024
Kamala Harris is set to deliver her concession speech today, acknowledging Donald Trump's victory in the presidential election. Traditionally, the losing candidate calls the winner to congratulate them, and Harris has done just that. Her speech will happen at Howard University, her alma mater, in Washington DC at 4 PM ET. This is not the first time Harris has used Howard University for significant moments; she launched her 2020 campaign and prepared for her debate against Trump there.
The concession call and speech are not legal requirements in the US election process. In 2016, Hillary Clinton gave her concession speech the morning after the election. Trump, however, did not concede the 2020 election to Joe Biden.
Major news networks like CBS and CNN are likely to broadcast Harris's speech live. The Guardian will also provide a live feed and coverage in their election blog. On election night, Harris's campaign co-chair, Cedric Richmond, addressed the crowd instead of Harris, assuring supporters that the campaign would continue to ensure every vote was counted.
Trump's victory speech was held in Florida, where he declared his win as the "greatest political movement of all time" and promised to heal the country and fix its borders. Harris will preside over the certification of the election results in January, and Trump will be inaugurated as the 47th US president on January 20, 2025.
