Kaneland High School’s track teams showed strong performances at the state preliminaries on Friday, securing spots in Saturday’s finals for two of their relay squads. While not all results were posted online for field events, the focus remained on the relays where Kaneland’s speed and teamwork kept their hopes alive.
In the Class 2A State Championship, Sycamore’s 4x800 relay team locked down the last qualifying spot with a time of 8:02. 6, beating Tolono Unity by over two seconds. Meanwhile, Kaneland’s 4x100 and 4x200 relay teams both finished second, just shy of the top spot. Their 4x100 time of 42. 04 seconds was only 0. 4 seconds behind the winners from Metamora, while their 4x200 time of 1:27. 69 kept them in contention. These narrow misses suggest Kaneland’s relays are competitive but still have room to improve before the finals.
Kaneland’s junior Gavin Smith ran the 800 meters in 1:56. 97, placing 11th overall. Though he missed the top five by two seconds, his performance wasn’t far off the mark. Small gaps like these often separate good runners from great ones, and Smith’s effort shows potential for future meets.
Over in Class 3A, DeKalb’s long jumper Drake Gay cleared 6. 7 meters to advance to Saturday’s finals. What’s notable is that Gay is still a junior, meaning he’ll have more chances to compete at this level. His qualification highlights the importance of young athletes stepping up when it matters most.
