In many parts of the world, good health workers are hard to find. This problem is even bigger in fields like occupational therapy (OT), physical therapy (PT), and speech-language pathology (S-LP). Many professionals leave or switch jobs, causing trouble for health systems. So, researchers in Quebec, Canada, wanted to find ways to keep these professionals in their jobs.
They talked to 51 OTs, PTs, and S-LPs one-on-one and held group discussions with managers, educators, professional groups, and regulatory bodies. These talks happened between 2019 and 2022. The team used a special way of looking at data, guided by a theory called cultural-historical activity theory.
Five main ideas came out of these talks:
1. Make Work Match Values: Professionals want their jobs to fit with what they believe in.
2. Improve Job Fit: Jobs should match what professionals want and need.
3. Change Workplaces: This includes the physical place, social groups, culture, and structures at work.
4. Re-think Professional Governance: How the profession is run and managed needs a closer look.
5. Offer Benefits: Both formal (like training) and informal (like support) benefits help.
The team said that working together across different systems and groups is key to making these changes. It's not just about changing jobs, but also making the public value these professionals more.
In short, we need smart, multi-system plans to help rehab professionals love their jobs. This way, they'll be ready for today's and tomorrow's needs.
