Keeping the Caregivers: What's the Deal?
Tue Mar 11 2025
The long-term care (LTC) sector is facing a big challenge. It's hard to find and keep nurses and personal support workers (PSWs). These are the people who take care of elderly residents in nursing homes and assisted living facilities.
LTC facilities are struggling to fill vacancies. This is a problem for everyone. Residents may not get the care they need. Staff members are overworked and stressed. This can lead to burnout and more people leaving their jobs. It's a vicious cycle.
Why is this happening? There are a few reasons. The work can be physically and emotionally demanding. The pay is often low, and there are few opportunities for advancement. Many PSWs and nurses feel undervalued and unappreciated. This can make them look for jobs elsewhere.
The COVID-19 pandemic made things worse. Long-term care facilities were hit hard. Staff members had to deal with increased workloads, personal protective equipment (PPE) shortages, and the risk of infection. Many left the field because of this.
So, what can be done? One solution is to improve working conditions. This could mean better pay, more training, and better support for staff. Another solution is to change the way we think about long-term care. We need to recognize the value of the work that PSWs and nurses do. This could make the job more appealing to new workers.
But there's more to it than that. We need to think about the bigger picture. Long-term care is a growing field. As the population ages, more people will need care. This means we need more workers. We need to find ways to make the job more attractive. We need to invest in training and support. We need to create a culture of respect and appreciation. This will help us keep the caregivers we have and attract new ones.
