Keeping the Troops Paid During the Shutdown
Funding Sources
The government shutdown is causing widespread issues, but the White House is prioritizing the payment of troops. They have secured funds from various sources to cover paychecks:
- Research and Development Fund
- Supply Purchase Fund
- Law Passed in July
The White House claims to have $5.3 billion ready for the current pay period. A senior official stated:
"We've always said we are going to take care of our troops."
However, concerns remain about the long-term sustainability of these funds if the shutdown persists.
Billionaire Donation
A significant donation from Timothy Mellon has also been made to support military salaries. The Defense Department received $130 million to help cover troops' pay.
Payment Delays
Troops were scheduled to be paid on Friday, but as of Thursday, many have not yet received their paychecks. Navy Federal Credit Union, a popular choice among troops, reported that they are still awaiting the full military pay funds.
Legislative Attempts
Some senators attempted to pass a bill to ensure troops get paid during the shutdown, but it was blocked. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent warned that if the shutdown continues, troops might miss their next paycheck on November 15.
