Kelley Larson Snags Overtime Victory, Ends 51‑Race Drought

Kyle Larson finally broke a long losing streak. He had not won a race for 51 tries. At the Gateway track he snatched the victory in overtime. He edged out his Hendrick teammate Alex Bowman. Larson’s crew called for four fresh tires on lap 202 while Bowman only took two. That call gave Larson the edge to hold the lead through the extra laps.

The race was wild. Officials waved the yellow flag eighteen times, a track record. Many cars suffered brake problems or spun out, yet none touched each other. The action led to two red‑flag stops. The first came when Larson took the lead from Joey Logano with eleven laps left. The second happened with just two laps remaining in the regular distance.

Several title contenders got caught in the mess. On lap 141 Bubba Wallace chased Chase Briscoe into turn one, forcing both to spin and pulling William Byron into the crash. Later, on lap 213 Chase Elliott’s brakes failed and he collected Briscoe, sending both into the wall. On lap 222 Wallace and Josh Berry made contact, which pushed Tyler Reddick into Berry and sent Christopher Bell into the barrier. A restart brought together Ty Gibbs, Daniel Suarez and AJ Allmendinger in another wreck. Meanwhile, Ryan Blaney’s brakes exploded on lap 155, dropping him to the back but he still earned stage points. Chris Buescher suffered a similar brake failure on lap 237.

Despite the chaos, Denny Hamlin stayed on top of the points standings with a ninth place finish. Hendrick teammate William Byron finished fourth and Ross Chastain took fifth. Larson’s win moved him up in the chase for the title. Keselowski, who missed the playoffs, talked about getting back at Carson Hocevar but ended the day twelfth. The next showdown is Saturday night at the short track in Bristol. Gibbs won there last spring in overtime, beating Blaney by just five hundredths of a second, while Blaney led a huge chunk of the laps.
