Kenya's Tax Uprising: Youth Take to Streets and Social Media
Nairobi, KenyaMon Oct 07 2024
In Kenya, the tension between citizens and the government has hit a boiling point. On Thursday, Nairobi witnessed intense clashes between protesters and police. The spark? A controversial finance bill that's up for vote in Parliament. Young Kenyans, some as young as 18, are fighting against proposed tax hikes, which they see as a threat to their future.
The government has faced strong backlash since Tuesday. Despite attempts to soften the blow by suspending certain taxes—like a 16% VAT on bread and a 2. 5% tax on motor vehicles—the anger hasn’t died down. Protesters want the entire bill scrapped, not just tweaked.
The scene in Nairobi was chaotic. Police resorted to tear gas and water cannons to disperse peaceful demonstrators. Journalists covering the protests weren't spared; at least one was injured by a tear gas canister. The city center remained tense as lawmakers debated inside Parliament, which has been sealed off with roads blocked since morning.
Young Kenyans, often referred to as GenZs, are leveraging social media platforms like TikTok to amplify their voices. Known for its short, engaging videos, TikTok is now a hub for political activism. Protesters use it for real-time updates and to document any police misconduct.
Mass arrests have also been recorded, with at least 283 people detained by police on Tuesday alone, including journalists covering the protests. The youth are determined, using all means available to fight for what they believe is their right.
