Kevin Durant's Future: The Spurs' Dilemma
Phoenix, Arizona, USA,Mon Jun 16 2025
The basketball world is buzzing with talk about Kevin Durant's future. He is set to earn a hefty $54. 7 million in the 2025-26 season. The Suns have been clear: they want the best deal for their team, even if it means looking beyond Durant's preferred destinations of Miami, San Antonio, and Houston. The San Antonio Spurs have been in the mix, but their recent offer to the Suns didn't quite hit the mark. This has led some experts to suggest that the Spurs might need to look elsewhere for help.
Two well-known analysts, Bill Simmons and Ryen Russillo, recently discussed the Durant trade rumors. Simmons even floated a few "fake trade" scenarios. One involved De'Aaron Fox heading to the Brooklyn Nets, with the Spurs gaining trade picks to acquire Kon Knueppel. Another scenario had Fox going to Brooklyn, and the Spurs getting Trey Murphy in a three-team trade with the New Orleans Pelicans. Both analysts believe these moves could be better for the Spurs than bringing in Durant.
So, why is De'Aaron Fox being considered for a trade? Several sources speculate that the 2nd pick in the upcoming NBA Draft could be Dylan Harper. Harper, son of Chicago Bulls legend Ron Harper, has shown promise with his college stats: 19. 4 points, 4. 6 rebounds, and 4. 0 assists per game. However, the Spurs already have two guards, De'Aaron Fox and Stephon Castle, which might not leave much room for a third.
Kon Knueppel and Trey Murphy are also in the mix. Knueppel, known for his shooting skills, averaged 14. 4 points and shot 40. 6 percent from deep in college. Murphy, on the other hand, is 12 years younger than Durant and has a more team-friendly contract. Trading Fox for these players could help the Spurs build around their star, Victor Wembanyama.
The Suns, however, aren't making it easy. They want a good return for Durant, and their demands include Devin Vassell and other veterans. The Suns ended the 2024-25 season with a disappointing 36-82 record, and losing Durant would be a big blow. But their demands might be a bit too high. The Spurs have already offered a package including Devin Vassell, Harrison Barnes, and draft picks, but the Suns want more.
The Suns' high demands and the Spurs' need to rebuild around Wembanyama make this situation complex. Will the Spurs find a way to get Durant, or will they pivot to other options? Only time will tell. The basketball world is watching closely to see how this unfolds.
