Kid gets sick after eating at a kebab shop

Costa Mesa, California, USAFri May 29 2026
A three-year-old girl from Orange County ended up in the hospital for nearly three weeks after eating beef from a local kebab shop. Her family shared part of their meal with her, and within a day she had bloody diarrhea, vomiting, and severe pain. Doctors later found she had acute kidney failure, a serious complication linked to E. coli bacteria. The outbreak wasn’t just limited to one family. Health officials found at least nine people sick across California who had eaten beef kofta from the same chain between late March and the end of April. Six of those infected were children. Five people had to be hospitalized, and two developed hemolytic uremic syndrome, a rare but dangerous condition that can damage kidneys.
Investigators traced the problem back to contaminated ground beef used in the kofta. They interviewed sick customers and discovered the beef came from a single supplier. Both the restaurant chain and the supplier now face a lawsuit claiming they sold unsafe food and failed to protect customers. The restaurant says it cut ties with the supplier once the problem was discovered and insists no other states reported cases. They also say the contaminated product was pulled from shelves nationwide weeks ago, so the risk is over. But the lawsuit argues the damage was already done for families who trusted their food was safe.
