Kid of a federal contractor nabbed for $46 million crypto theft

St. Martin, FranceThu Mar 05 2026
A young man linked to a federal contractor was taken into custody after authorities say he stole about $46 million in cryptocurrency from the U. S. Marshals Service. The suspect, whose father runs a company that supplies “critical services” to federal agencies, was caught on the Caribbean island of St. Martin with a metal briefcase full of cash and several hard drives, according to the FBI. The theft first surfaced in January when a blockchain investigator known as ZachXBT published evidence that the suspect bragged about moving large amounts of crypto—mostly Ethereum—to prove his wealth to other alleged hackers. ZachXBT traced the funds back to assets seized by the U. S. government in 2024 after a major hack of Bitfinex in 2016.
Once the investigator went public, the U. S. Marshals Service began looking into the case. The suspect’s father did not comment when asked for remarks. The FBI, working with a French military tactical unit, carried out the arrest as part of an international effort to stop fraud against taxpayers. After being exposed, the suspect reportedly taunted the investigator on Telegram and sent small “dust” amounts of the stolen coins to other wallets, a tactic that can implicate innocent users. The investigator celebrated the arrest on social media with a brief message of triumph. The case highlights how cryptocurrency can be used to hide large sums and how investigators rely on public data to uncover wrongdoing. It also shows that even those connected to government contractors are not immune from law enforcement scrutiny.
