Kidnapper’s Motive Hinted, Still No Arrest
Tucson, Arizona, USAFri Mar 13 2026
The investigation into Nancy Guthrie’s disappearance has reached a new stage, with law‑enforcement officials suggesting they have an idea of why the abduction occurred. Sheriff Chris Nanos, who leads the effort in Pima County, told reporters that authorities are “pretty sure” the crime was a targeted act. He stopped short of naming any suspect or motive, saying that revealing details could jeopardise the case.
Nancy Guthrie, 84, vanished from her Tucson home on February 1. Since then, a broad search has uncovered several pieces of evidence: DNA samples, ransom letters and other clues. Despite these leads, no one has been formally charged or identified as the kidnapper.
The sheriff warned that the unknown perpetrator could pose a danger to others. “It would be foolish to assure people they’re safe just because the Guthrie family was chosen, ” Nanos said. He urged caution and reminded the public that anyone could be next.
Savannah Guthrie, Nancy’s daughter and a well‑known television host, has taken to social media to appeal for her mother’s return. She offers a $1 million reward for information that leads to Nancy’s safe recovery, and has repeatedly expressed uncertainty about whether her mother is still alive.
While several arrests have been made in connection with the case, none have yielded a definitive suspect. A man from California was detained over false ransom notes and faces federal charges, but he is unlikely to be linked to Nancy’s abduction. A delivery worker was also questioned and released after a brief detention.
The investigation continues, with officials combing through evidence and interviewing potential witnesses. The community remains on alert as the search for Nancy Guthrie persists.
