Kidnapping, Crypto Heist and the Cost of Trust
Minnesota, St. Paul, USAFri Jun 19 2026
A pair of brothers from Waller, Texas, entered a Minnesota home with guns and demanded access to the family’s digital money. They held the man, his wife and son hostage for over eight hours, forcing the father to log into his cryptocurrency accounts and transfer more than $8 million worth of digital coins. The brothers were later caught, pleaded guilty and now face up to twenty years in federal prison.
The crime unfolded on September 19. While the family was at home, the brothers appeared out of a driveway armed with an AR‑15 style rifle and a shotgun. They bound the adults, placed them in the garage, then moved the wife and child to the living room where they were forced to lie on the floor. The father was dragged into a cabin three hours away, where he had to hand over his wallet. After the transfer, a child called 911 and authorities were alerted.
Investigators traced a rented vehicle back to the brothers’ home in Texas, using surveillance footage and forensic evidence. The FBI and Washington County Sheriff’s Office worked together to secure the arrest a few days later.
In court, both men admitted guilt. They agreed to pay restitution of over $8 million and each could receive up to twenty years in prison. The case highlights how cryptocurrency’s lack of a central regulator makes it attractive for thieves, and that digital money can be lost forever once transferred.
Local officials expressed shock at the violence that shook a quiet community. Sheriff Dan Starry praised the teamwork of federal and local law enforcement, while FBI agents emphasized that such crimes will always be pursued aggressively. The sentencing date is still pending.
