Kids Test Drive STEAM Careers; Flood Insurance Clicks Online

Kissimmee property owners can now shop for flood insurance without leaving home. A new federal website lets people get quotes and buy policies in minutes. The tool lives at FloodSmart.gov and works for anyone in a participating community. You type in basic property details and see options right away. Then you can purchase online or send the quote to an agent.

At the same time, seventh graders across Osceola County got a taste of future jobs. Heart of Florida United Way hosted a STEAM day at NeoCity Academy. Students tried science-based CPR and tested microchip technology. They also handled professional film equipment and learned how airports manage air traffic. A $25,000 grant from the Florida Lottery Bright Futures covered the costs.

Kelly Astro from United Way said showing kids possibilities early changes how they see their schoolwork. The event brought together schools, businesses, and community groups. Organizers wanted students to connect classroom lessons with real careers. Many participants had never imagined these paths before.

The flood insurance upgrade comes with a bonus. Kissimmee improved its community rating from Class 7 to Class 5 in July 2026. That means eligible homeowners now get a 25 percent discount on most policies. The previous rating only offered 15 percent off. Local officials earned the better score by exceeding minimum flood management standards.
