Recently, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention released some concerning news. The vaccination rates for kindergartners in the US have dropped again. In the 2023-2024 school year, only 92% of kids got their routine shots—a decrease from 93% last year and 95% in 2019-2020.
The drop is mainly due to more parents opting out of vaccines for religious or philosophical reasons. Only a tiny 0. 2% of exemptions are medically necessary.
This means many kids are at risk of serious diseases like measles, whooping cough, and polio. MMR vaccination, for example, fell to 92. 7%, leaving about 280,000 kindergartners vulnerable.
Vaccinations for diphtheria, tetanus, and pertussis (DTaP) also dropped, along with polio and chickenpox vaccines.
For the fourth year in a row, the US is below the 95% target needed to prevent these diseases from spreading. And it's getting worse.
Why are some parents saying no to vaccines that have been proven safe and effective? It's a complex issue, but it's important to understand that without vaccines, these diseases can come back and harm communities.
It's crucial to educate and inform parents about the benefits of vaccinations to keep kids and communities healthy.
