Knoxville Smokies Face a Rough Start in Series Opener
Knoxville, Tennessee, USAWed May 20 2026
The Knoxville Smokies came back to Covenant Health Park on Tuesday, but they struggled to get their offense going and lost 3‑1 in the first of a six‑game set against the Montgomery Biscuits.
Yenrri Rojas began the game for the Smokies, giving up six hits and three runs over five innings. He struck out four batters and did not walk anyone, but the team could not overcome an early deficit.
Montgomery opened scoring in the second inning with a fielder’s choice, then added a clear home run from Kenny Piper to take a 2‑0 lead. A third run followed the next inning, and that was all the Smokies needed to keep the Biscuits ahead.
In the fifth inning, right fielder Jordan Nwogu grounded into a fielder’s choice and was replaced by Ed Howard at shortstop. The lineup shifted as Karson Simas moved to center field and Alex Ramirez went to right field. Howard and Edgar Alvarez each hit a two‑out double in the seventh, giving the Smokies their only run of the night. Alvarez also drew a walk earlier in the game, making him the sole player to reach base twice for Knoxville.
Reliever Jace Beck worked well, striking out seven batters over three innings and keeping the Biscuits’ offense in check.
After this loss, the Smokies sit at 21‑19 in the Southern League North. Montgomery remains tied with them in the South, both at 21‑19.
The series continues through Thursday, and fans can look forward to a variety of promotions at the ballpark, including all‑you‑can‑eat buffets, themed nights, and a special bobblehead giveaway.
