Kosovo votes again amid ongoing political deadlock

Kosovo, PristinaSun Jun 07 2026
Kosovo will hold its third parliamentary election in just a year and a half on Sunday, as political parties remain stuck in a cycle of failed agreements. No single group has managed to secure enough seats to form a stable government, leaving the country without key leadership roles for longer than expected. With no functioning parliament, even the ceremonial position of president has stayed empty for months. Despite recent gains, Prime Minister Albin Kurti’s party still lacks the support needed to push through decisions, forcing another round of voting. The elections come at a critical time for Kosovo, which declared independence from Serbia in 2008 but still struggles to build strong institutions. The European Union has made it clear that progress on reforms is necessary before Kosovo can join the bloc. Meanwhile, Kurti’s party, which won over half the votes in the last election, has clashed repeatedly with opposition groups over leadership choices, leading to the parliament’s early shutdown. Some analysts doubt whether Sunday’s vote will finally break the deadlock.
One major challenge is Kosovo’s fractured political scene, with 17 parties and three coalitions competing for 120 parliamentary seats. The voter list includes over 2 million names—far more than the actual population—because many in the diaspora (mostly in Western Europe) are registered to vote. This group often supports Kurti’s party, which has a strong nationalistic and pro-Western stance. However, even with this advantage, forming a majority government won’t be easy. Relations with Serbia remain tense, adding another layer of difficulty. Kurti’s party opposes giving concessions to Serbia, keeping tensions high. The EU has pushed for compromise, but so far, no party has managed to unite enough factions to make meaningful progress. With no clear path forward, Kosovo risks falling further behind in its EU membership goals.
