In Kyiv, over a thousand apartment buildings are still in the cold, with no heating after a recent Russian attack. This happened earlier this week, and it's not the first time. Russia has been hitting Ukraine's energy systems hard since the invasion in 2022.
On Friday, a missile strike hit Kyiv, leaving almost the whole city without power or heat. It's been freezing, and it's only gotten worse. Temperatures are already below -12 degrees Celsius, and they're expected to drop to -20 degrees this week.
By Sunday, water was back on, and some electricity and heating had returned. But the city's mayor, Vitalii Klitschko, said on Telegram that things are still tough. He warned that the cold isn't going anywhere soon, so the problems will keep going.
Meanwhile, Ukraine's energy ministry reported another attack on the power system overnight. This time, it briefly cut off electricity to the southeastern regions of Dnipropetrovsk and Zaporizhzhia. Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko noted that there hasn't been a single day this week without attacks on energy facilities. In total, there were 44 attacks.
This is the fourth winter of the war, and it might be the coldest and darkest yet. The damage to the grid is piling up, and the cold is biting harder than ever. People are left wondering how much more they can take.
