Ladies in Tech: New Program Inspired by 'Hidden Figures'

USAThu Oct 31 2024
Ever heard of the film "Hidden Figures"? Well, it's not just a movie anymore! Women leaders in science, tech, engineering, and math (STEM) from around the world are kicking off a special program this week. Run by the U. S. State Department, this initiative is all about empowering women in STEM fields. It's called "Hidden No More" and will go on until mid-November. The ladies will visit nine cities in the U. S. , like Washington D. C. , Boston, and Los Angeles, where they'll meet with other STEM experts. They'll chat about how women can make big strides in science and innovation. Plus, they'll talk about ways to inspire girls to get into STEM. This program was inspired by the true story of four amazing Black female mathematicians who worked at NASA in the 1960s. These ladies, Katherine Johnson, Dorothy Vaughan, Mary Jackson, and Christine Darden, did super-complex math for space missions despite facing racism and sexism. They even got Congressional Gold Medals last month! During this year's program, the women leaders will visit some cool places like the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum, MIT, and even Walt Disney Studios to see the science behind their magic. Since 2017, over 200 women leaders from 119 countries have taken part. Isn't that neat?
