Lakers Reveal New Voice and New Scout Leader
The Lakers unveiled Derrin Horton as their new public‑address voice, filling the spot left vacant by the late Lawrence Tanter. Horton, who once tried to sound like Tanter’s baritone, was told to keep his natural tone. He brings a background in TV broadcasting, voice acting, and a lifelong love for the Showtime era. After a brief stint as a high‑school PA announcer, he built a career in sports media before returning to the court’s soundtrack.
Horton’s connection to Tanter runs deeper than work. The veteran announcer even recorded a wedding introduction for Horton, mimicking the iconic “Mr. and Mrs. Horton!” line. He says he wishes he could have spoken with Tanter before stepping into the mic. As a big fan, he knows what fans want: a little extra flavor that heightens the game experience. He’s been practicing with Sparks games, learning player names, and focusing on a calm, professional style.
Meanwhile, the front office is shuffling roles. Pooh Jeter was named director of pro scouting, moving from the Portland Trail Blazers where he coached players and served as assistant GM for the G League affiliate. The Lakers have added more than 15 front‑office staff since a 2025 ownership shift, following the Dodgers’ model, and continue to expand their scouting ranks.
The team’s first preseason game is set for October 8 against Sacramento, and Horton is already fine‑tuning his delivery. He aims to inform, entertain, and honor Tanter’s legacy while keeping the atmosphere lively. The new scouting leader will help shape the roster as the organization pushes forward after a busy rebuilding period.
