Largest Superyacht Turns Into Ocean Research Hub

A new 639‑foot vessel, now the biggest superyacht on the planet, is set to leave Brazil next year for a decade‑long science mission that will cross the Atlantic, Caribbean and Pacific. The ship, named REV Ocean, is not just a luxury cruiser; it carries state‑of‑the‑art labs, a submarine garage, an on‑board metal workshop and 3D printing tools that usually belong to government research ships. The design team, led by Espen Øino and H2 Yacht Design, has packed the yacht with equipment that lets scientists study the deep sea from a floating base.
The first ten missions will last 18 months and focus on gathering data that can help governments meet their ocean‑conservation pledges. Global plans aim to protect 30 % of the planet’s waters by 2030, but a lack of detailed evidence makes it hard to set realistic targets. “We cannot protect what we don’t know, ” said the science director, Eva Ramirez‑Llodra. The yacht’s role is to fill that knowledge gap and link research findings directly to policy makers.
One early expedition will explore Brazil’s Vitória‑Trindade Chain, a 2, 000‑kilometre underwater mountain system that hosts diverse deep‑sea life. Researchers hope to learn how age, shape and depth of these seamounts influence marine communities. Another mission will examine the Caribbean Biodiversity Corridor, a joint effort by Cuba, Jamaica, Haiti and the Dominican Republic. While surface habitats like mangroves and coral reefs have been studied for years, the deep ocean of this region remains largely uncharted.
After each cruise, a week‑long meeting in a nearby port will bring scientists, policy makers and local stakeholders together to discuss fresh findings. The goal is to shorten the time between data collection and decision‑making, allowing immediate input into conservation strategies. The first voyage will also serve as a test run for the yacht’s systems and crew, ensuring that all scientific, policy and educational tools work smoothly together.
Although a quarter of the ship’s operational life will be spent chartering for wealthy guests, those funds are intended to support its philanthropic mission. Before any private passengers arrive, REV Ocean will dedicate itself entirely to science, aiming to set a new standard for how research vessels operate and influence ocean‑policy worldwide.
