This past week was filled with uplifting moments in the Latin music scene. Let's dive into some of the highlights.
First up, the We Love Foundation celebrated its 12th annual gala. This event brought together a star-studded lineup of entertainers from the worlds of music and fashion. The gala was held at the Rubell Museum in Miami on February 12 and featured performances by Puerto Rican hitmaker Guaynaa and Cuban duo Gente de Zona. The foundation honored Venezuelan comedian George Harris with its Spirit Award. Harris was also part of the 2024 Billboard Latin Music Week. The funds raised during the gala will support various humanitarian initiatives. These include Mission:Brain in Mexico, the Guiribitey Foundation in the Dominican Republic, and the Agrolibano Foundation in Honduras. These organizations work tirelessly to improve the lives of vulnerable communities by providing access to health, education, and welfare.
Meanwhile, in New York, a unique twist on Shakespeare was brought to life. Amor with No B. S. was an off-Broadway production staged at The Flea Theater in Manhattan during Valentine’s week. This modern take on Shakespeare featured a Gen-Z Latin cast. The cast included Diego Echeverria, Sofía Vilches, Eli Vazquez, and Bralmarys Batista. The show tackled themes of modern love and identity, blending classic Shakespearean drama with contemporary cultural nuances. One standout moment was Sofía Vilches' performance of Bad Bunny’s hit “Tití Me Preguntó” in Shakespearean prose. This fusion highlighted the connection between timeless themes and the experiences of young Latin audiences.
The production was a collaborative effort under the guidance of producer Roberto Sneider, director Estefanía Fadul, and playwright Matt Barber. Chispa, the Latin-centric dating app, supported the event. Julia Estacolchic, head of brand and marketing at Chispa, emphasized the significance of the production. She noted that reimagining Shakespeare from a Latine perspective is not just about modernizing a classic. It's about young Latino singles owning their cultural identities and embracing their roots while exploring the boundaries of love.
In a heartwarming moment, Colombian singer-songwriter Carlos Vives celebrated his mom’s 90th birthday. He shared photos and videos of the celebration on Instagram, expressing his love and gratitude. Vives, known for his hit “Fruta Fresca, ” shared that his mother has taught him to love his land and has been a source of inspiration.
