Laufey Takes the Lead in a New God of War Adventure
Santa Monica, California, USAWed Jun 03 2026
Santa Monica Studio and Sony announced a fresh chapter in the God of War saga during PlayStation’s State of Play show. The new game, titled God of War: Laufey, shifts the spotlight from Kratos to his wife and Atreus’s mother, Faye. She is better known by her true name, Laufey, and has guided the heroes since 2018. Now she becomes the playable hero.
The story starts after Faye’s funeral, which set up the earlier games. She wakes in a strange realm called Everywhen. The place is described as the source of all magic and a meeting spot for gods and monsters from many myths, not just Norse. In this world she discovers that the plans she left for Kratos and Atreus are failing.
The trailer shows a different look from previous titles. New creatures appear, such as green‑skinned and red‑skinned deities, a giant six‑legged lion‑like beast, and hints of Egyptian and Central Asian mythology. Fans think the series may now explore a wider mythological world.
Combat changes too. Laufey wields a huge sword and can move souls around. She can separate an enemy’s soul from its body to strike it directly or throw it at other foes. The system blends the fast, combo‑heavy action of earlier Greek games with the modern God of War feel.
She is not alone. Laufey travels with two companions: Phranque, a chatty cosmic cube, and Rue, a living ribbon‑like guardian. Both help her fight and explore new lands. The voice cast features Deborah Ann Woll as Laufey and Jack Quaid as Phranque.
Santa Monica Studio says this game will reveal more about Laufey’s past and her human side, which was mostly unseen before. The title is being developed for PlayStation 5 and a release date will be announced later.
