Leadership Matters: Nurse Practitioners in Finland's Healthcare

In Finland's wellbeing services counties, the integration of Nurse Practitioner (NP) roles is a work in progress. Despite ongoing health and social care reform, NP role integration remains fragmented. Leadership plays a crucial role in shaping the future of healthcare, but there's a lack of evidence on how nurse leaders advance NP role integration.

Nurse leaders from four wellbeing services counties shared their perceptions on NP role integration through focus group interviews. Their insights reveal that successful integration requires strong nursing leadership and governance. It's not just about recognizing the value of NP roles, but also about actively involving nursing leaders in workforce planning, service development, and health policy decision-making.

The Finnish healthcare system is undergoing significant changes, creating opportunities to redesign professional roles and workforce models. However, integration depends on a clear strategic vision and coordinated leadership across policy, organizational, and clinical levels. Without this, NP role integration is likely to remain fragmented.

Nurse leaders must take an active role in shaping the future of healthcare in Finland. By doing so, they can ensure that NP roles are integrated effectively, providing high-quality care to patients and communities.
