Leadership Shakeup at Connecticut State Colleges
Connecticut, USASun Apr 26 2026
The interim chief of the Connecticut State Colleges and Universities stepped down after a complaint surfaced about policy violations. The allegation was discovered on April 20, and by April 23 the official was put on leave while an inquiry began. The specifics of the claim remain undisclosed.
Following his departure, the board appointed its general counsel to take over temporarily. This move is meant to keep daily operations smooth while the board decides on a new permanent leader. A national search for the next chancellor will start later this year, led by vice chair Juanita James with help from regents Ira Bloom and Don Williams.
This resignation follows a similar event earlier in the year. Former chancellor Terrence Cheng was removed after an audit found misuse of funds on meals, drinks, and chauffeur services. The board stresses that its priority is the system’s effective functioning and support for students, faculty, staff, and institutions.
The board will not comment further on the personnel issue. However, union leaders have voiced concerns about how the system handles wages and administrative costs. Seth Freeman of 4Cs SEIU Local 1973 criticized the board for paying executive salaries while faculty at Charter Oak State College earn wages that can fall below minimum wage under a per‑student model. He urged the board to reallocate funds from executive expenses to ensure fair pay for educators.
The union represents faculty and staff across several state colleges, including the teaching staff at Charter Oak State College and part‑time faculty at the University of Hartford. Their message highlights a broader debate about how public higher education funds are distributed and the impact on educators who serve diverse student populations.
The situation underscores a pattern of leadership turnover that can divert resources away from the core mission of education. It raises questions about accountability, financial oversight, and the long‑term stability of state college systems.
