Learning to Live with Differences

For a while now, we've been hearing about the friendly campaigning style of Vice President Kamala Harris and Minnesota Governor Tim Walz. They were seen as a less harsh alternative compared to their opponents. Their supporters tried to mimic this approach. But when they lost, the pleasant demeanor vanished quickly. Many liberals who backed them now want those who voted differently to suffer. On a TV show called The View, co-host Sunny Hostin joined the post-election upset by saying it's reasonable to avoid family who voted for President-elect Donald Trump. She felt Trump was different from past candidates like Bush, who people might not have agreed with but saw as decent. Co-host Whoopi Goldberg added that if she had an LGBTQ+ child, she wouldn't want them around someone who doesn't understand them. Some left-wing critics even compare Trump to Hitler and claim his presidency will threaten women's and LGBTQ+ rights.Trump is definitely a controversial figure, but that doesn't mean people who voted for him should be cut off from family and friends who disagree. Many voters saw him as the better choice out of two difficult options. Even those who fully support him aren't defined solely by their vote. It's funny that Hostin talks about morality issues when the Harris-Walz side has their own. For instance, Harris strongly supports abortion, which doesn't sit well with pro-life or even pro-restriction voters. Yet, they still interact with family and friends who voted for her. Family bonds are more important than temporary politicians or party loyalties. Goldberg's comment about not wanting an LGBTQ+ person around someone who doesn't understand them shows how intolerant some liberals can be. They think it's best to avoid people with differing views, but that's not realistic in a diverse country. We must learn to coexist with different opinions, for our own well-being and society's. If the roles were reversed and Harris voters won, they'd likely disapprove of Trump voters' behavior. Instead, they call it self-care, but it's really just a tantrum.
