Lee Cronin to Revive ‘The Mummy’ with a Fresh Twist
Blumhouse, USASat Dec 21 2024
Filmmaker Lee Cronin, known for his work on the horror flick "Evil Dead Rise, " is set to bring a new take on the classic monster movie "The Mummy. " This time, the project is a collaboration between Blumhouse and Atomic Monster, two reputable horror production houses. Cronin will both write and direct the movie, scheduled for release on April 17, 2026, through New Line Cinema.
In a statement, Cronin hinted at a darker and more frightening version of the ancient curse. "I’m digging deep into the earth to raise something very ancient and very frightening, " he shared. Adapting classic horror stories has been a successful venture for Blumhouse, which has already given modern twists to other Universal monsters like "Invisible Man" and is preparing for a new "Wolfman" film.
The original "Mummy" franchise from the late '90s featured stars like Brendan Fraser, Rachel Weisz, and Dwayne Johnson, while the 2017 reboot with Tom Cruise did not fare as well. Cronin’s "Evil Dead Rise" was a commercial success, making nearly $150 million on a modest $12 million budget.
Cronin will be joined by producers from his own label, Doppelgängers, along with horror specialists James Wan and Jason Blum, with John Keville also producing. Blumhouse and Atomic Monster will co-finance the project. The team includes executive producers Michael Clear, Judson Scott, and Macdara Kelleher, with Alayna Glasthal overseeing the project for Atomic Monster. This rebirth of "The Mummy" aims to captivate audiences with a fresh, chilling take on the iconic creature.
